DISHA, the Path to a new way of life
You could create a safe path for a vulnerable young girl......
The Disha, PATH in Hindi, project is a new path for 25 young girls who chose to live in the Disha house in Varanasi. The Disha project welcomes, protects and raises girls, who were wandering along the Varanasi train station platforms and nearby slums. Aged between 6 and 17, all were illiterate, most drug addicted, alcoholic, undernourished and often sick... they were lost and forgotten. Today they are part of a loving community and are experiencing a blessed childhood with the possibility of a future that was previously only an unlikely dream.
The girls are cosseted by two matajis, the loving mothers of the House, mataji Savitri and mataji Shashikala. Sarita, a qualified psychologist, meets with the girls twice a week, particularly those in any distress. Sarita listens to the girls’ hopes and aspirations and steers them onto the right path! The house has security 24 hours a day thanks to our dedicated guards Sunil, Baranasi and Mohammad Ali. You can make a difference by sponsoring the pastoral care of a vulnerable young girl...
Also dearly loved is Disha House’s cook, Sarita (not the psychologist!), who prepares healthy and delicious food daily for our children and staff at Disha house, which includes morning thalis, lunches, afternoon snacks and dinner! It’s no wonder our girls have changed from thin emaciated beings to healthy and happy young girls! You can make a difference by sponsoring the food costs of a malnourished young girl...
All the girls attend one of two schools, close to Disha House. Nitu, a teacher from one of their schools conducts coaching classes every afternoon. She is an important personality in the girls’ life as she is aware of many of their concerns and watches and mentors the girls carefully. You can make a difference by sponsoring the education costs of an illiterate young girl.....
Twice a week, there are sewing and computer classes for the elder girls. Also, twice a week the girls dance with Pandit Mataprasad, a famous Khatak master and great singer. For two of our girls, dancing Khatak has become like a vocation: they love it so much and want to attend special Indian dance classes. We are taking care of this dream... You can make a difference by sponsoring the extracurricular activities of a deprived young girl...
Disha House is spacious, filled with a beautiful light which comes from both the sky and the Ganges river. Thanks to a donation from Electricians Without Borders who installed photovoltaic and solar panels on the roof of the house, we have permanent access to lighting in a country where power cuts are constant. This provides vital security to the children and protects them from health hazards. The proximity of the river, the heavy rainy seasons or monsoons, and the sometimes unbearable heat result in regular and costly maintenance for the building and equipment. You can make a difference by sponsoring a safe house for vulnerable young girls...
You can choose the purpose, amount and timing of your gift. You may decide to help one young girl for her entire costs, every year. Or, you can select the type of expenditure you wish to cover and pay annually or monthly to help secure one little girl's basic needs.
